Music therapists use music and musical elements to support clients as they develop the areas of communication, mental health, emotional health, and physical health (movement, range of motion).

What do we work on in music therapy?

The goals of music therapy are client specific and may include:

  • Practicing the use of communication systems

  • Providing opportunities for self-expression

  • Exploring ways that music can be used to support mental health

  • Participating in social, music-making experiences in a group

  • Practicing skills that will apply to daily living (taking turns, social skills, etc.)

What happens in music therapy?

Sessions focus on the goals of the client and take into consideration their likes and needs. Some things you might see in a session include:

  • Singing or playing instruments

  • Dancing

  • Writing songs

  • Drawing while listening to preferred music

  • Sharing our feelings about different types of music

  • Creating playlists 

How will I know what’s happening in music therapy?

Communication may include:

  • Initial assessment

  • Goal plans

  • Regular updates

  • Variety of resources shared with caregivers
